Similans 2003

To thine own bald guy be true

A tale of inaccuracy and deception on (and in) the Andaman Sea. Words by Patrick*, photos by Iain, Jason, Mary and Simon.

Well, here I am again, trying to make sense out of the first Marsden Bros dive trip of 2003: a five-day, four-night liveaboard to the Similan Islands. It sounded like a fantastic way to start the year.

As with the Bali trip, there were representatives from many countries and all walks of life. We met at the Seafarer Divers shop in Chalong Bay, Phuket. From there, we transferred to the MV Andaman Seafarer. It's a big, comfortable, spacious boat and although the captain's weather reports aren't even remotely accurate, it is fantastic for diving.

Before I start, I need to advise everyone about the contents of this report. I am sure you have seen those made-for-television movies claiming to be based on a true story. That statement gives the writers and directors full freedom to twist the story any way they chose as long as they make a passing reference to reality before the closing credits. This trip report will adhere to those strict guidelines, so anything you read may or may not be true.

Okay, on with the show:

* Some words were put into the narrator's mouth by Mary. If you are insulted by anything, blame them both.
