If you like pina coladas...

Part 3: Girls on film

Meanwhile many of us were wondering, in the midst of all this exhausting diving and subsequent relaxation, what the colour-coordinated Zac was doing. Our movie-making companion claimed to be working hard on his next script during the day, but the sunburn evidence and the hours spent receiving massages rich in local oils suggested his time was spent merely lounging around the pool area. Naturally we have given him copious amounts of unprofessional advice on the potential of a diving movie, including various lines to use and characters we could all portray.

At this point I'm supposed to include the quote of the trip, a question I asked Zac (in good faith, despite what they say) about the profitability of the pornographic movie scene worldwide. My question was, 'So does the porn scene pay?' Yes, this statement was taken out of context, but in order to be true to my word, I have included it in this dive report.

You will never be short of a variety of dive sites in this part of the world. Batu Kelabit and Emerald are nearby sites about 15 minutes from Tauch Terminal by Indonesian fishing boat. There is nothing difficult about these dives except getting back into the boats. Gwen and I had numerous bruises on our bodies after this event as the local fisherman felt the best way to get us aboard was by pulling us up like beached whales. Not a good look.

Emerald provided a special dive for me as I was chased by a triggerfish three times, to the amusement of the rest of the divers. Sarah swam for her life with me and ascended to about 10m as we tried to get out of the invisible nesting cone. This day of diving ended with some (more) drinks as we settled to watch the rugby at a local Balinese bar. We also experienced some Balinese dancing which was complimented by Sarah and Simon's girls, dressed in beautiful fairy outfits. Good to see the Aussies win.

The final and best dive of the entire trip was at Kubu, some 30 minutes away by fishing boat. This dive is an aquarium dive. On entering the water we found a coral pipefish, moray eels, lionfish, juvenile sweetlips and a myriad of aquarium-like small fishes. At one stage I found myself waving to my dive buddy through a mass of purple and blue fish. Fantastic! The highlight was the four white-tip reef sharks, graceful and awesome! I wish we had more time at Kubu and recommend you do more than one dive there. You will truly enjoy it.

The Bali trip was relaxing and easy going. I'll definitely go back to Tulamben again as it catered for all our needs.
